The Croatian Biomass Platform comprises five sites which generate renewable energy from agricultural and forestry biomass.

The comprises five sites in Croatia, generating renewable electricity from forestry and agricultural biomass. Collectively, the plants generate approximately 200,000 MWh of renewable electricity annually, equivalent to powering over 45,000 homes each year.

The platform’s plants are located in Gospić, Grubišno Polje, Glina, Karlovac and Brinje.

All the sites benefit from long-term feed-in tariffs and biomass supply agreements, and utilise low-grade forestry biomass sourced from local suppliers.

Applying Ancala’s experience in biomass

The first investment in the portfolio was the site in Gospić. We identified the opportunity through building a relationship with a family-owned Czech renewable developer with a portfolio of assets in central Europe. The vendor required liquidity and Ancala was able to develop an attractive solution as an experienced biomass owner.

Expanding through acquisition

Since Ancala’s first investment, we have been working closely with the portfolio to enhance its operations and acquire new complementary sites. In 2024, the portfolio added a 5MW plant and an adjacent drying facility to the portfolio. The site expanded the portfolio’s generation capacity and increased its footprint of biomass plants.

In 2026, Ancala mroe than doubled the platform’s generation capacity through the acquisition of a further three plants in Croatia. This acquisition had led to the platform becoming the largest owner and operator of biomass plants in Croatia.
