Headquartered in Mönchengladbach, Hausheld AG is one of the largest independent smart metering operators in Germany. It has been offering municipal utilities modular solutions for a holistic smart meter rollout which is certified by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) since 2017.
The digital transformation of the energy industry is critical to Germany’s energy transition as it informs more intelligent energy usage. Hausheld AG’s advanced and proven smart meter solutions support Germany’s plans to achieve climate neutrality by 2045 by enabling municipal utilities to pursue city-wide smart meter roll outs without any upfront costs. This supports the German government’s national smart meter rollout targets from 2025 onwards.
Ancala’s investment and proactive support will provide Hausheld AG with additional funding and expertise to expand and deliver on its secured pipeline of more than 200,000 smart meter installations. The Ancala team will work with the company’s existing board members and alongside the management team, led by CEO Bouke Stoffelsma, as it seeks to underwrite the rollout obligations of municipal utilities across the nation through its smart metering solution. The infrastructure manager’s investment complements German investment company Deutsche Beteiligungs-AG in the group of shareholders of Hausheld AG, which invested in 2020 and will remain invested in the business.
Bouke Stoffelsma, CEO, Hausheld AG, comments:
”Hausheld is committed to supporting the energy transition in Germany by providing industry-leading end-to-end smart metering solutions to municipal utility companies. We are receiving orders from more and more municipal utilities for a full rollout of smart meters in their grids. The orders have recently become so large that we can no longer finance them in Germany alone. With Ancala, as a multi-billion Euro infrastructure financier, we can now finance major smart meter rollouts in Germany.
“Ancala’s support enables us to implement the smart meter rollout for municipal utilities with more than 100,000 metering points. Previously, we have served municipal utilities with 10,000 to 100,000 meters. Now we also extend our offer for the cost-effective solutions which fulfil all legal requirements to the larger municipal utilities. We’re looking forward to working with the Ancala team and customers to deliver these solutions going forwards.”
Hausheld AG specialises in replacing all meters with ‘smart’ meters on a street-by-street basis. This means that all end customers can participate in the energy transition with electricity consumption better adapted to the availability of renewable energy generation from the sun and wind. Hausheld AG is currently delivering the replacement of all old electricity meters, which Hausheld AG calls a ‘full rollout’, in more than 10 cities. The technology for smart metering systems in Germany is being tested and certified by the Federal Office for Information Security. Hausheld AG’s technology also has strong cyber security and privacy protection functions.
Tim Power, Partner, Ancala, adds:
“Hausheld is a market-leading smart metering business with a unique delivery model that is already delivering on Germany’s ambitious metering targets. We could not be prouder to partner with Bouke and his team to take the company’s success to the next level. We are looking to provide significant capital to the business and to apply our experience of scaling similar platforms in our existing portfolio to help Hausheld build on its leading position in the market, accelerating the digitalisation of Germany’s grid.”
The acquisition marks Ancala’s second investment in the German smart metering market, following its investment in fast-growing meter owner and operator Solandeo earlier this year. Ancala’s smart metering portfolio is now the largest independent offering in Germany.
The smart metering platform is able to address the needs of all major customer segments in the market. This includes the mandatory segment through Solandeo’s residential and commercial customers with attached renewable energy generation units, and the default segment through Hausheld AG’s regional and city-wide rollouts in partnership with municipal utilities.
